ITR Due Dates for AY 2026-27: Complete Filing Deadline Guide

Filing your income tax return on time helps you avoid penalties, interest charges, and the loss of certain valuable benefits like carrying forward losses. Here’s a complete breakdown of the ITR due dates for AY 2026-27, which cover income earned during FY 2025-26.

The Staggered Deadline Structure for AY 2026-27

For the first time, India has introduced staggered ITR filing deadlines based on which ITR form applies to a taxpayer, rather than a single common deadline for everyone. This change was announced as part of Union Budget 2026, aimed at reducing congestion on the e-filing portal by spreading out the filing load across different taxpayer categories.

ITR-1 and ITR-2 Due Date

For salaried individuals and other taxpayers filing ITR-1 or ITR-2 — those without business or professional income requiring audit — the due date for AY 2026-27 is July 31, 2026. This covers the majority of salaried employees, pensioners, and individuals with income from capital gains, house property, or other sources not involving business income.

ITR-3 and ITR-4 Due Date (Non-Audit Cases)

Individuals and HUFs with business or professional income who do not require a tax audit, and who file ITR-3 or ITR-4, now have until August 31, 2026 — an extra month compared to salaried filers. This is a notable change from earlier years and specifically benefits freelancers, consultants, and small business owners whose accounts don’t require formal audit.

Due Date for Audit Cases

Taxpayers whose accounts are subject to audit under Section 44AB of the Income Tax Act have until October 31, 2026, to file their return. This extended timeline reflects the additional time businesses need to complete their statutory audit process before finalizing and filing their tax return.

Transfer Pricing Cases

Taxpayers required to furnish a transfer pricing report — typically businesses engaged in specified international or domestic transactions with associated enterprises — have the latest deadline among all categories, extending to November 30, 2026.

What Happens If You Miss the Deadline

If you miss your applicable original due date, you can still file a belated return under Section 139(4) of the Income Tax Act, with the deadline for belated returns set at December 31, 2026. However, filing a belated return comes with real costs: a late fee of up to Rs 5,000 (or Rs 1,000 if total income doesn’t exceed Rs 5 lakh) under Section 234F, monthly interest at 1% under Section 234A on any unpaid tax, and the loss of the ability to carry forward certain losses, including business and capital losses, to future years.

Revised Returns

If you’ve already filed your ITR but discover an error or omission afterward, you can file a revised return. For AY 2026-27, revised returns can generally be filed up to March 31, 2027, giving taxpayers a reasonably generous window to correct mistakes after their original filing.

Updated Returns (ITR-U)

For taxpayers who missed filing altogether, even the belated return deadline, an updated return facility remains available under Section 139(8A), allowing voluntary disclosure of previously unreported income within a longer window — up to 48 months from the end of the relevant assessment year — though this comes with additional tax of 25% to 60% depending on how late the update is filed.

A Transition Year: Old Act to New Act

AY 2026-27 marks a notable transition point in India’s tax framework. Even though the Income Tax Act, 2025 comes into force from April 1, 2026, income earned during FY 2025-26 is still governed entirely by the older Income Tax Act, 1961, since the return relates to a period before the new Act took effect. This makes AY 2026-27 effectively the final assessment year filed under the familiar 1961 framework — returns for income earned from April 2026 onward will fall under the new Act and won’t be due until 2027.

Practical Steps Before Filing

Before filing, it’s worth checking your Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Form 26AS on the income tax portal to confirm every income and TDS entry matches your own records, since mismatches are one of the most common causes of delayed processing or scrutiny notices.

Advance Tax Payment Deadlines

Separate from the ITR filing deadline, taxpayers with a tax liability exceeding Rs 10,000 in a financial year are required to pay advance tax in installments throughout the year, with due dates typically falling in June, September, December, and March. Missing these advance tax deadlines can attract interest under Sections 234B and 234C, independent of whether the final ITR itself is filed on time.

Keeping Documentation Ready Before Filing

Gathering key documents ahead of your filing deadline — Form 16 from your employer, bank interest certificates, capital gains statements from brokers, and proof of deductions under sections like 80C and 80D — well before your due date helps avoid a last-minute scramble and reduces the likelihood of errors that could trigger a notice or delay your refund processing.

Final Thoughts

ITR due dates for AY 2026-27 are staggered across July 31, August 31, October 31, and November 30, 2026, depending on your applicable ITR form and audit status. Filing before your specific deadline helps you avoid late fees, interest, and the permanent loss of loss carry-forward benefits, making it worth marking your applicable date well ahead of time.
